Success
January 12, 2006 James Hahn II, CPC, weighed 273 lbs. He was constantly overrun by feelings of guilt, anxiety, depression, mood-swings, edginess, and raising thoughts. He had gained and lost 50 lbs. four times in 8 years. Like many Americans, he sauntered around in a haze wondering what was wrong with him.
That fateful Thursday, he was standing in his kitchen with his shirt off eating ice cream straight out of the gallon. Realizing his inability to control his sugar consumption, he decided to give up eating sugar for 120 days.
By the beginning of 2007, he was down to 225 lbs. While he maintained that weight throughout the year, he could never get below that number. He also continued to struggle with the problems listed above.
As 2008 began, things were getting bad again. His mood-swings and depression were worse than ever, but help came in the form of Lent. He gave up starch, sauce, and dairy and inadvertently cut the rest of the sugar out of his diet. He was amazed as his troubles vanished overnight. No more mood-swings and no more outbursts of rage. He truly felt like a new man.
After a nasty run-in with a pile of waffles and a bottle of syrup on Easter Sunday, he put the food/mood connection together. Soon afterward, a friend recommended Potatoes Not Prozac by Kathleen DesMaisons and the world finally made sense. He was not crazy; he was just “Sugar Sensitive.”
He continued the refinement of his lifestyle and eventually lost 87 lbs. He then began coaching his brother who weighed 315 lbs. and had a host of marital issues. In eight months, he lost 126 lbs., his marriage was reconciled, and his second child was on the way.
As the result of these experiences, James knows that lasting change is not only possible; it is inevitable as soon as you choose to make it so.
