Google CEO – “You Need A Coach”

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Eric Schmidt is the CEO of one of the most successful companies in American history, why would he need a coach? He says it best, “The one thing people are never good at is seeing themselves as others see them.” Therefore, he relies on his coach to give him perspective and challenge his decisions and actions.

Tiger Woods uses a coach for the same reason. Even though he can swing a golf club better than anyone in the world, he knows only a qualified coach can help him improve that swing.

Therefore, I have to ask, where do you need change in your life? Are you dealing with a sugar addiction? Do you have a negative self concept? Would you like to have better relationships? Are you looking to make a career change? If possibly the wealthiest athlete ever and the CEO of one of the best companies in the world know they need coaches to accomplish anything, how can you be any different?

This Is Your Brain On Chocolate, Cheese, Meat, & Sugar

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

“Chocolate isn’t really A drug; it’s the whole drugstore sort of wrapped up all in one.” - Neal Barnard, M.D.

A friend of mine recently predicted that if she talks to me in 20 years, she bets I will be a vegan. Granted, I gave up dairy a while back because it doesn’t make me feel good, but the thought of giving up meat all together is still beyond imagination.

Having said that, Neal Barnard, M.D., certainly makes a rather convincing argument for doing so in the video above. I began watching the presentation because of his strong opening about the addictive nature of sugar, but little did I know, he would go on to explain how different types of meat and dairy have similar opiate affects on the brain.

I’m certainly not ready to forgo my chicken today, but who knows where I’ll be in 2,039?

The Sugar Monster

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I recently came across a great web site dedicated to teaching children how to eat healthy called TheSugarMonster.com

They have 20 episodes posted that range between 3 and 5 minutes long. Each show features the resident evil one, The Sugar Monster, encouraging children to eat as much candy and sugar as possible. When the kids decline his enticements, he explodes.

It’s entertaining, informative, and a great way to convince your kids to eat their fruit and veggies.

Check it out!

David & Goliath

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Yesterday, I wrote about the seeds of doubt and this morning I got a perfect follow up in my inbox from none other than Chris Widener. He gleans some very valuable lessons about overcoming “giants” in our lives from the story of David & Goliath.

He summarizes his points as follows:

1. Expect giants to block the way to the Promised Land.
2. Attack your giant for a reason bigger than your own victory.
3. Recognize your own strengths.
4. Don’t use someone else’s armor.
5. Take five weapons, though you may only need one.
6. Run toward the giant, not away from it.
7. Make sure it is dead after it falls.

The more I read him, the more I like him. His common sense approach to leadership and influence are outstanding. Take a moment to get the rest of the story here and don’t hesitate to sign up for his newsletter. He delivers every time.

Moving On…

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Ok, blogging has been sporadic lately, but only because I’ve had to focus all my attention on my job that actually pays the bills. But, things have settled down and it’s time to redouble the efforts because there has been no shortage of misinformation about food these days.

So, here comes the rain!

How Colorful is Your Plate?

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I really don’t like a good majority of the eating advice I hear, simply because most of it is entirely too scientific and only leads to greater confusion among consumers. This confusion only serves to create an entire market of unsuspecting consumers who fall prey to food marketers using the latest headlines to convince us what they are pushing is actually good for us.

However, here’s some advice that’s so simple, it sounds like it came straight from Mom; eat as many colors as you can every day.

As Ali Hale over at diet-blog.com points out, “Each color is an indication of a key nutrients being present in the fruit or vegetable.” So, the more colors you eat, the more nutrients you’ll receive, and the less you’ll have to spend on vitamins to make up for what you’re not getting in your food.

The Rest of the Story.

Diet Wars

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

In April of 2004 PBS’s Frontline did a fantastic show on the differing views of what we should be eating and why.

Reporter Steve Talbot examines the claims of Weight Watchers, Pritikin and Ornish, and Atkins, as he attempts to discover the best way to combat his own borderline obese diagnosis. He does a fantastic job of expressing the confusion and anxiety many people feel in dealing with the myriad competing and contradictory views on diet and wellness in America.

My favorite point of the show came from Dr. James Hill, director of the University of Colorado’s Center for Human Nutrition, who commented on our current “toxic food” environment, ”[When] you see 65 percent of Americans are overweight or obese, what amazes me is that anyone maintains a healthy weight in this environment.”

In the end, Talbot takes a little from each program and develops a philosophy of food that works for him, which is surprisingly close to mine; though I would encourage him to start eating fruit again.

You can watch the entire show online, enjoy!
