Are You Pouring On The Pounds?
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Yesterday, I mentioned that drinking just one soda per day will help you gain 26 pounds per year. Well, it turns out the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is currently running an ad campaign throughout the city to “encourage consumers to choose beverages with less sugar.”
As someone who has been writing about sugar consumption for quite a while, it’s awesome to see sugar finally getting a proper kick in the pants.
“The campaign’s signature image – in which a bottle of soda, ’sports’ drink or sweetened iced tea turns to a blob of fat as it reaches the glass – is a stark reminder of how these products can lead to obesity and related health problems. The ads urge New Yorkers to cut back on sugary beverages and quench their thirst with water, seltzer or low-fat milk instead. Many people may stir a teaspoon or two of sugar into their coffee, but few realize that a 20-ounce bottle of soda can contain 16 ½ teaspoons of sugar.”

Sugar does not cause Diabetes!??
Monday, October 19th, 2009
I recently came across a web page on HealthCastle.com that actually has a headline that states, “Sugar does not cause Diabetes!” On top of a potentially life threatening condition and elevated exposure to several chronic illnesses, diabetics have a slew of misinformation to put up with; as if being diabetic isn’t frustrating enough!
I’m fairly certain someone from the Flat Earth Society must have written this article. To say there is no link between sugar consumption and diabetes is like saying smoking does not cause lung cancer or that exercise leads to obesity. It’s simply ridiculous to see anything like this on a web site claiming to be “healthy”.

Congratulations, You May Already Be Obese!
Saturday, October 17th, 2009
In a recent study carried out by YouGov for Slimming World reported by BBC News, researchers found that of 2,000 people surveyed, just over a quarter of them were obese. However, only 7% of those asked saw themselves as obese.
Dr. Ian Campbell states, “These figures do suggest that the discrepancy has widened with worryingly few people recognizing their weight is potentially harmful to them.”
According to endocrinology and diabetes consultant Jonathan Pinkney, it is a problem of perception that has come about as the population of the world has grown larger. “In my view there is a very clear tendency for individuals with obesity to feel that they do not stand out from the crowd.”

How Will You Look At 84 Years Old?
Monday, September 28th, 2009
Meet Bob Delmonteque, he’s 84 years old. Yes, you heard me right, 84 years old!
I came across a Correct Weight Loss Blog post about him over the weekend and I was shocked. I’m only 29 years old and I don’t even come close to this guy! Some people would try and discount his appearance to genetics, but it’s clear that above anything else, his philosophy on life is the main reason he’s stayed in such great condition.
“I actually am growing younger as I’m getting older. And this starts with the mindset, because you can do anything you want to do in life if you want it bad enough. There’s nothing you cannot accomplish. So for any of you seniors, I know it’s never too late to get going. All you need is the goal and the impossible dream. You need a plan, you have to organize yourself and you’ve got to work at it. There has to be a spiritual side of you. You have to so intensely believe that you can do it and that is the secret to making it happen. Because you must persist until you succeed. You can never give up.”

LA Daily News – “Soda makes you fat”
Saturday, September 26th, 2009
The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research just released a study looking at the link between soda consumption and obesity. To say that some of the statistics are shocking would be an understatement.
“(Research) found that adults who drink at least one soda or sugar-sweetened energy drink a day are 27 percent more likely to be overweight or obese. For children, the risk of obesity soars 60 percent with each daily serving of soda or sugary beverage.”
Wow! 60 percent more likely to be overweight or obese from at least one soda per day!? The affects sugar addiction can have on children is staggering. Executive director Harold Goldstein states, “We are drinking soda like it’s water, but it’s not. It’s water packed with 17 teaspoons of sugar. Our kids are drinking bottles of sugar.”

“Obesity could become top cancer cause”
Friday, September 25th, 2009
The Associated Press has reported that obesity is quickly catching up to smoking as a top preventable cause of cancer.
“‘Obesity is catching up at a rate that makes it possible it could become the biggest attributable cause of cancer in women within the next decade,’ said Andrew Renehan, a cancer expert at the University of Manchester.” The article goes on to state, “Scientists aren’t sure why being fat boosts your cancer risk, but suspect it is connected to hormones.”
I am certainly no scientist, but here is my hypothesis. If you are obese, you are no doubt a sugar addict who is consuming massive amounts of sugar. Since you eat a lot of sugar, your glucose (blood sugar) levels are constantly spiking and dropping. Your roller coaster blood sugar levels only make you gain more weight because the excess glucose that is not used right away for energy is stored as fat for later use. The excessive weight you gain brings about inflammation at the cellular level and the door is opened for cancer to take hold.

Help Wendy’s Fight Diabetes, Eat More Frostys!!
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Every once in a while you find a news story that is so absurd you think it must be a joke; here is one of the best I’ve seen for quite some time.
Piscese Foods, the owners of 31 Wendy’s franchises in Austin, Texas raised over $72,000 for the Austin chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. While that is an incredibly notable cause, especially since type 1 diabetes is an incurable disease that can be a major obstacle in a person’s life, you won’t believe how they raised the money.
“2009’s donation was raised through a one-month promotion beginning in mid-July in which customers at participating Austin area Wendy’s restaurants could purchase a Frosty Coupon Book for $1.00. Each book included four (4) coupons, good for either a Free Small Frosty and Frosty-Cino. Customers have been very excited about the value of the Frosty Coupon Book, where for only $1.00 they receive four (4) free Frosty’s.”
