GI Joe
Sunday, November 30th, 2008
While proponents of the Glycemic Index (GI) may have good intentions in teaching people how to manage their blood sugar levels, as Alan Aragon of Men’s Health points out, one often questions their common sense.
Consider these overwhelming logical errors;
“1. Both pound cake and soda have a lower GI than watermelon.
2. Chocolate ice cream has a lower GI than a parsnip.
3. The GI of a Twix bar is lower than that of all the foods we just mentioned.”
It’s ridiculous reasoning like this that has gotten us to where we are in America. People want to keep believing they can count calories or do some sort of algebraic equation to substitute Dunkin Donuts for Krispe Kremes and the GI feeds right into that mentality. As opposed to challenging people to actually change their lives, they are encouraged to simply keep eating what they have been.
In short, the GI is just another way to top the New York Times Best Seller list with a slew of fad diet books. After all, if you can convince people to follow such insane logic as that listed above, you’re almost guaranteed a repeat customer when they fall off the diet because you made them believe they could actually live a healthy lifestyle with pound cake and chocolate ice cream.

Hi, My Name Is James And…
Wednesday, November 26th, 2008
No surprise for me here, but according to Psychology Today, “…an affinity for sweets appears to be a marker for those at risk of developing alcoholism.”
“Lead author Alexei Kampov-Polevoy, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, recruited 163 college-age social drinkers…Participants with a paternal history of alcoholism were 2.5 times more likely to enjoy sweets.”
I say no surprise here because I’ve always found my body’s reaction to sugar is exactly the same as my body’s reaction to alcohol; one drink means five more and one cookie means the whole box. I grew up using Pixy Styx like drugs to stay up all night and then grew up only to find myself drinking and doing drugs all night.
So, watch your kids and see how they react to sugar. And if they react anything like I did as a child, get them off the stuff. You may just save them from a lifelong battle with much more serious “stuff.”

St. John’s Wort Can Help With Depression
Saturday, November 1st, 2008
Rick Nauert, Ph.D., over at PsychCentral.com recently reported the herbal extract St. John’s Wort, “…is effective in treating some types of major depression according to a new Cochrane Systematic Review.”
Lead researcher Klaus Linde states, “Overall, we found that the St. John’s wort extracts tested in the trials were superior to placebos and as effective as standard antidepressants, with fewer side effects.”
To come to that conclusion, Linde and his staff reviewed 29 trials with 5,489 patients exhibiting signs of major depression. The natural plant extract proved to be just as effective as synthetic drugs and had the added benefit of minimal adverse effects, which meant less people dropped out of the trial.
This is further proof that God created everything and, as such, works through His creation to bring about the healing of man.
If only we could finally accept that.

How Sugar Destroys Human Health
Saturday, November 1st, 2008
I just stumbled upon a fantastic article by Dr. Cindy Clayton. It’s always great to run across an article that makes things so clear with statements like, “sugar…is a low grade poison like any other addictive substance.”
In the article, she advocates a gradual withdrawal from your Sugar Addiction.
“The first step to cutting out sugar is to throw away all refined sugar and to refuse to buy any refined sugar – and to replace it with only unrefined organic sugar. Next, if the foods you are eating and the drinks you are habitually drinking contain sugar then gradually cut down on them and switch to healthy food and drink. If you drink 4 sodas each day, start by cutting down to 3 each day for a few days and then to 2 each day – then to one and finally don’t put this liquid sugar-poison in your body at all. Cut out cookies. the same way.”
While I prefer a more direct route, it’s great to see a health professional being so blunt.

Don’t Eat This, Or Listen To That
Saturday, November 1st, 2008
In yet another laughable attempt at teaching families about good nutrition David Zinczenk and Matt Goulding recently published Eat This Not That! for Kids!
Here is one the more outrageous examples of “advice” that can be found in the book.
- Instead of McDonald’s Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips (400 calories, 23 grams fat), order their 8-piece Chicken McNuggets with Apple Dippers and caramel dip (355 calories, 15.5 g fat).
If you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you probably quickly noticed they left out the most important facts; carbohydrates and sugar. So, let’s examine this “health tip” with a more complete perspective.
A 3 piece McDonald’s Chicken Selects has 23g of simple carbohydrates that might as well be sugar, given how quickly they will become glucose in your system. I looked all over their web site and I couldn’t find the 8-piece being recommended; however, the 10-piece has 27g of carbohydrates. So, thanks for the advice guys, by switching to McNuggets I have accomplished nothing, besides changing the shape of the chicken-like product I am consuming.

Moving On…
Saturday, November 1st, 2008
Ok, blogging has been sporadic lately, but only because I’ve had to focus all my attention on my job that actually pays the bills. But, things have settled down and it’s time to redouble the efforts because there has been no shortage of misinformation about food these days.
So, here comes the rain!
